What’s in Anthony Improgo’s mind pours out in the shoegaze-influenced dreampop from his solo project LOWLAH. And there’s a lot going on in there. It’s dark. It’s vulnerable. It’s hopeful. Listening to his music will make you happy to be depressed. The lyrics for the songs started swirling around in Anthony’s thoughts after his father died. He wanted to channel that hurt into his own recordings, but he was a drummer in a band, Parade of Lights, signed to a major label that was having some success. The personal sonic outpouring would have to wait.

In the summer of 2018, the band was unceremoniously dropped from the label. It was a bit of a shock since the word came right after their latest single had broken out to generate 1 million streams two weeks after its release. The band was now in limbo. And limbo is not good for bands. Could he pull off making music as the sole creative force and the lead singer?  He’d never done it, and it seemed daunting. But at the end of 2018, Anthony started writing all those words in his head into songs with hooks and melodies with a sound influenced by the artists of his youth; and, in the process, teaching himself how to record and produce better than he ever had. In early 2019, with the project taking shape, he chose the name LOWLAH, which reflected one of his favorite songs, “Lola Stars and Stripes” by a Toronto band called The Stills.

In early 2019, though, the writing and recording would have to take a break when Anthony was involved in a serious skiing accident that left him close to being paralyzed from the neck down. He broke three vertebrae in his neck, six ribs and both shoulder blades. He was rushed to surgery where doctors were able to stabilize his neck and spinal cord by performing an anterior cervical fusion. With the surgery successful and the physical therapy going well, the mental rehab had to be dealt with, too, because it was getting darker inside Anthony’s head.

While his skiing helmet saved his life, he knew LOWLAH would save his mind, so he dug in and finished an EP. He could finish the tribute to his dad, pour his feelings out to the world, and let other people interpret those emotions to help themselves, too. It was personal and cathartic.

After releasing his first EP "Always", Anthony has set his sights higher by not only making more music but doing everything else himself: mixing and mastering his music, shooting and editing his music videos, designing artwork, handling his social media production and marketing, and being his own PR advocate. The music video for “Can You Hear Me Now” was shot, directed, produced & edited by Anthony in the Arizona desert. It embodies the #360Artist ethos.
